Default Common ENT Problems

As is widely known, ear, nose and throat problems are mostly related to each other some way or the other. An infection in any one of them results in counter infection in the other two. Some common causes of ear infections include:

1) Infection of otitis externa: Some people are in the habbit of scratching their otitis externa or ear canal with non-recommended things like hair pins or other blunt objects. This however causes trauma in the ear subsequently leading to infection.

2) Boil in the ear: We may often experience conditions when even the slightest movement of the jaw or pinna results in severe pain in the ear. This usually happens due to the presence of a boil in the ear as a result of some infection. In such a case, antibiotics may be required.

3) Impacted wax: In some people there is a possibility of excessive wax being secreted and deposited as a plug in the ear canal. This plugging leads to decreased hearing and pain. Since, removing this wax can at times be difficult, it is removed using special syringing or instrumental manipulation. In case the wax is hard, it requires softening with wax solvents before removal.

4) Unwanted body in the ear: Young children are mostly in the habbit of putting all sorts of things in their ears from bits of paper to beads, seeds, chalk pieces and what not. When it comes to kids, only ENT specialist should be consulted.

5) Acute Suppurative Otitis Media(ASOM): This is an acute ear problem common in infants and children. In this, there is an inflammation of the middle ear by pus causing bacteria. This condition mainly results due to infection of the nose and throat.

I agree that the ears, nose and throat get affected even if only one part has a problem. Ear infections should not be ignored but rather should be treated right away because they could lead to more serious problems in the future. One possible effect of this is hearing loss. Contrary to what many of us believe that hearing loss is only experienced by the elderly, this condition actually affects both the young and old.

And mind you, millions of people of all age groups are suffering from hearing loss. If you don’t want to be one of them, then take extra care of your ears.

Thank you for this information. I agree ear, nose and throat are mostly related to each other, thus if something happens to our nose, somehow, it will end up as an infection in the other.
